There was a Fire Safe Council Forum on May 21, 2025 with a panel representing San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, San Diego County Fire, and Cal Fire to discuss the fire severity zone maps published in March with many of the San Diego Fire Safe Councils.
TLDR; San Diego Fire-Rescue is working to add areas to the base map provided by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
- Add in the urban areas that were on earlier maps based on the more granular information currently available.
- Up-zone the Moderate and High buffer zones to Very High zones to simplify usage.
- Remove Miramar waste site as it is Federal land.
- Possibly remove Fiesta Island as it is uninhabited and surrounded by water.
The proceedings were streamed via Zoom by SD Urban Wildfire. Below is the presentation portion of the meeting presented by Fire Safe Council Forum Presentation on Fire Hazard Zone Maps by Brian Barkley of Cal Fire. The full meeting including Q&A can also be viewed on YouTube.
There is also an FAQ created from the meeting minutes.
